Facebook Link Image Size Guide
When you share a link on Facebook, the picture people see comes from the page itself, and it is the largest part of the preview. A badly sized image gets cropped, and the click-through suffers. This Facebook link image size guide explains the right dimensions and how to design for them.
The size
Make a link image at 1200 x 628 pixels. That is a wide landscape shape, a little under two to one. It is the shape Facebook uses for the large preview card, so a picture made at this size is shown whole instead of being trimmed.
The same file is useful beyond Facebook. Many networks and messaging apps use a similar wide picture when a link is pasted, so it is worth having one ready for each important page.
What a link image is for
A link preview has a short job: tell a person, in a glance, what is behind the link and why they might click. It sits in a feed full of other things. That means:
- one clear subject
- a few large words at most
- strong contrast between text and background
- no tiny details that vanish at small size
Layout advice
Keep text central and large
Previews are sometimes cropped slightly or shown smaller. Keep headline text in the middle, away from the edges. A good rule is to imagine a frame inside the picture and keep everything within it.
Use the width
A wide picture suits a left-and-right layout: a subject on one side, words on the other. This avoids crowding the centre and gives the eye a natural path.
Make it different from the page text
The post usually has a sentence of text above the card, and the page title below it. Do not repeat both in the picture. Use the picture for the hook, such as the product, the result, or the idea.
Example prompts
A landscape link image, 1200 x 628, of a neatly set wooden table with bread, olive oil and a small bowl of olives. Light from a window on the left. Text on the right in dark green: "Our new lunch menu".
A landscape link image for a guide article. Flat illustration of a calendar page with pencil marks, in orange and cream. Text on the left, large: "A simple content plan". Empty margin all around.
Checklist
- Is the picture 1200 x 628, not stretched from another shape?
- Does the words fit well inside, far from the edges?
- Can you read it when it is about the size of a postage stamp?
- Does it match your brand's colours and fonts?
- Are all words spelled correctly?
AI can make mistakes in lettering, so inspect the final picture closely.
One image per important page
If you share several pages regularly, such as the homepage, a booking page or a main offer, make a link image for each so that the preview says something specific. See Create Facebook Posts with AI for post ideas to go with them.
